Snow days in Michigan

Michigan districts decide their own closures, but the state sets the rules for making up the time: up to six canceled days a year are forgiven (Michigan Department of Education). The calculator puts all of Michigan in its snowiest level, so it takes more snow, ice or cold here than in most states to raise the closure estimate.

Winter weather that closes Michigan schools

How many snow days do Michigan schools get?

Michigan requires at least 180 days and 1,098 hours of instruction. Up to six days canceled for weather or other emergencies are forgiven, and the State Superintendent can forgive up to three more with a waiver (Michigan Department of Education). After an unusual winter the Legislature sometimes forgives more: in May 2026 a new law forgave extra days for schools in counties covered by that spring's storm and flooding emergency declarations (Office of the Governor, May 2026). Do not count on it for 2026-27.

What Michigan districts have published

Districts set their own triggers. Berrien County districts close when the wind chill reaches -20°F or below, according to the Coloma superintendent, and Ypsilanti decides around 5:30 am (The Manchester Mirror, Jan 2025).

How the calculator treats Michigan

The calculator reads the National Weather Service forecast for the exact point you enter, so the snow, ice, wind chill and alerts are local. What changes by state is how much of each it takes to raise the estimate:

Level 4 of 4: Snow belt: schools are well prepared

For a suburban public school in Michigan, any one of these gives the model about an even chance of a closure on its own:

  • 7.5 in of snow from 6 pm to 8 am (snow between 4 and 8 am counts extra)
  • 0.15 in of ice from freezing rain, from the evening before to the end of the school day
  • a wind chill of -30°F between midnight and 8 am

This is already the snowiest level, so elevation does not change it. These are model assumptions, not district rules. How the snow levels work.

The whole state, from Detroit to the Upper Peninsula, uses the same level. A storm that is routine near the lakeshore can be harder on a district that rarely sees lake-effect bands, and the model cannot see that difference.

Michigan cities

  • Grand Rapids: 77.6 inches of snow in a normal year, lake-effect bands, how Grand Rapids Public Schools announces closures, and how to read our estimate.
  • Detroit: about 45 inches of snow a year, freezing rain and cold alerts, how Detroit Public Schools Community District handles weather days, and our estimate.

Before you rely on the number

The percentage is an estimate from the weather forecast, not an official closure notice. It cannot see road conditions, staffing, buses or how many snow days your district has left, and it does not know a decision that has already been announced. Read how accurate the estimate is and what it leaves out.

Questions and answers

How many snow days do Michigan schools get?

Michigan forgives up to six canceled days a year, and the State Superintendent can forgive up to three more with a waiver. Days beyond that are usually made up (Michigan Department of Education). Your district's calendar may also include its own make-up days.

Does the calculator know about lake-effect snow?

Only through the National Weather Service forecast for your exact location. If the NWS forecasts a lake-effect band over your ZIP code, that snow is counted. The model does not add anything extra for being near the lake.

Will school be closed tomorrow in Michigan?

Only your district can say. The snow day calculator estimates the chance of a closure or late start from the National Weather Service forecast for your school's ZIP code, but it does not know announced decisions. Check your district's website, app or texts.
