# Snow days in Detroit

Detroit gets far less snow than west Michigan, so ice and cold can matter as much as snowfall when schools decide. Enter a school's ZIP code below to see the chance of a closure or late start from the latest National Weather Service forecast. The number is an estimate; the district makes the call.

## Snow in Detroit

Detroit averages 45.0 inches of snow a year (1991-2020 normal at Detroit Metro Airport, [NOAA](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/data/normals-annualseasonal/1991-2020/access/USW00094847.csv)), far less than west Michigan. Ice and cold matter as much here: freezing rain on December 26, 2025 closed parts of I-75 ([NWS Detroit](https://www.weather.gov/dtx/freezingrain-12262025)), and NWS Detroit issues an Extreme Cold Warning at -25°F ([NWS Detroit](https://www.weather.gov/dtx/winter_defs)).

## How Detroit schools announce closures

Detroit Public Schools Community District says weather closures draw down the six days of forgiveness Michigan gives each district, and it may extend days or add make-up days after that ([DPSCD](https://www.detroitk12.org/news/post-details/~board/detroit-public-schools-community-district-news/post/important-messages-from-the-superintendent)). In February 2022 it moved to online learning for a snowstorm instead of closing ([Chalkbeat Detroit](https://chalkbeat.org/detroit/2022/2/1/22912948/detroit-public-schools-virtual-learning-snowstorm-southeast-michigan)).

## Reading the estimate in Detroit

Level 4 of 4: Snow belt: schools are well prepared

For a suburban public school in Michigan, any one of these gives the model about an even chance of a closure on its own:

- **7.5 in** of snow from 6 pm to 8 am (snow between 4 and 8 am counts extra)
- **0.15 in** of ice from freezing rain, from the evening before to the end of the school day
- a wind chill of **-30°F** between midnight and 8 am

This is already the snowiest level, so elevation does not change it. These are model assumptions, not district rules. [How the snow levels work](https://calculatesnowday.com/how-it-works#snow-levels).

Michigan is the model's snowiest level statewide, so Detroit gets the same thresholds as Grand Rapids and the Upper Peninsula even though it averages much less snow. A moderate storm in Detroit can be more disruptive than the estimate suggests.

## Questions and answers

### How much snow does Detroit get?

About 45.0 inches in a normal year, based on 1991-2020 at Detroit Metro Airport ([NOAA](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/data/normals-annualseasonal/1991-2020/access/USW00094847.csv)).

### How many snow days does DPSCD get?

Like every Michigan district, it has six forgiven days. After that it may extend school days or add make-up days ([DPSCD](https://www.detroitk12.org/news/post-details/~board/detroit-public-schools-community-district-news/post/important-messages-from-the-superintendent)).

### Is the Detroit snow day estimate an official closure notice?

No. It is an estimate from the National Weather Service forecast. Only the school district can close schools, so check its announcement before changing your plans. [How accurate the estimate is](https://calculatesnowday.com/how-it-works#accuracy).
