Snow days in Ohio

Ohio counts instructional hours, not a fixed number of snow days, so a closure only has to be made up if a school drops below its minimum (Ohio Revised Code 3313.48). The calculator treats Ohio as a state that gets snow every winter, with the same thresholds from Cincinnati to the Lake Erie snowbelt.

Winter weather that closes Ohio schools

How many snow days do Ohio schools get?

Schools must provide at least 910 hours for full-day kindergarten through grade 6 and 1,001 hours for grades 7 to 12 (Ohio Revised Code 3313.48). Qualifying schools adopt a plan to make up time online, for up to the equivalent of three school days (Ohio Revised Code 3313.482).

What Ohio districts have published

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District lists 5 to 10 inches of snow on the ground, or 3 or more inches overnight on top of existing snow, along with ice, wind chill of -15°F or colder and visibility, among its criteria (News 5 Cleveland). Middletown City Schools closes when the temperature or wind chill is below about -20°F to -25°F and decides by 5 am (Middletown City Schools).

How the calculator treats Ohio

The calculator reads the National Weather Service forecast for the exact point you enter, so the snow, ice, wind chill and alerts are local. What changes by state is how much of each it takes to raise the estimate:

Level 3 of 4: Snow every winter

For a suburban public school in Ohio, any one of these gives the model about an even chance of a closure on its own:

  • 5 in of snow from 6 pm to 8 am (snow between 4 and 8 am counts extra)
  • 0.1 in of ice from freezing rain, from the evening before to the end of the school day
  • a wind chill of -20°F between midnight and 8 am

Places whose forecast grid point is above 1,800 m (about 5,900 ft) move up one level. These are model assumptions, not district rules. How the snow levels work.

The model cannot tell the snowbelt from the rest of the state. A Geauga County district that handles lake-effect snow routinely gets the same thresholds as a district near the Ohio River.

Before you rely on the number

The percentage is an estimate from the weather forecast, not an official closure notice. It cannot see road conditions, staffing, buses or how many snow days your district has left, and it does not know a decision that has already been announced. Questions and answers

How many snow days do Ohio schools get?

There is no set number. Ohio replaced calamity days with minimum hours: 910 hours for full-day kindergarten to grade 6 and 1,001 for grades 7 to 12. A closure only has to be made up if the school falls below its minimum (Ohio Revised Code 3313.48).

Can Ohio schools make up snow days online?

Yes, within limits. Qualifying schools adopt a plan to make up time online for up to the equivalent of three school days (Ohio Revised Code 3313.482).

Will school be closed tomorrow in Ohio?

Only your district can say. The snow day calculator estimates the chance of a closure or late start from the National Weather Service forecast for your school's ZIP code, but it does not know announced decisions. Check your district's website, app or texts.
