Snow days in Wisconsin

Wisconsin counts hours of instruction, and a weather closure day does not count unless the district offers instruction virtually (Wisconsin DPI). The calculator puts Wisconsin in its snowiest level, so it takes more snow, ice or cold here to raise the estimate.

Winter weather that closes Wisconsin schools

How many snow days do Wisconsin schools get?

Schools must schedule at least 437 hours of direct instruction in kindergarten, 1,050 in grades 1 to 6 and 1,137 in grades 7 to 12 (Wis. Stat. 121.02(1)(f)). The 180-day requirement was repealed in 2014 (2013 Wisconsin Act 257). A district may hold a virtual learning day so a weather closure still counts; the state does not approve these plans or set fixed rules for them (Wisconsin DPI).

What Wisconsin districts have published

Stevens Point says it does not use snowfall totals and judges each storm by whether roads, especially rural bus routes, are safe (WSAW, Dec 2025).

How the calculator treats Wisconsin

The calculator reads the National Weather Service forecast for the exact point you enter, so the snow, ice, wind chill and alerts are local. What changes by state is how much of each it takes to raise the estimate:

Level 4 of 4: Snow belt: schools are well prepared

For a suburban public school in Wisconsin, any one of these gives the model about an even chance of a closure on its own:

  • 7.5 in of snow from 6 pm to 8 am (snow between 4 and 8 am counts extra)
  • 0.15 in of ice from freezing rain, from the evening before to the end of the school day
  • a wind chill of -30°F between midnight and 8 am

This is already the snowiest level, so elevation does not change it. These are model assumptions, not district rules. How the snow levels work.

All of Wisconsin uses the snowiest level. Wind chill around -30°F gives about an even chance of a closure from cold alone in the model.

Before you rely on the number

The percentage is an estimate from the weather forecast, not an official closure notice. It cannot see road conditions, staffing, buses or how many snow days your district has left, and it does not know a decision that has already been announced. Read how accurate the estimate is and what it leaves out.

Questions and answers

Do Wisconsin snow days have to be made up?

Only if the closures take a school below its required hours. A weather closure day does not count unless instruction is offered virtually (Wisconsin DPI).

Can Wisconsin schools have a virtual learning day instead of a snow day?

Yes. Districts may hold virtual learning days so a weather day still counts, and the Department of Public Instruction does not approve or set fixed rules for these plans (Wisconsin DPI).

Will school be closed tomorrow in Wisconsin?

Only your district can say. The snow day calculator estimates the chance of a closure or late start from the National Weather Service forecast for your school's ZIP code, but it does not know announced decisions. Check your district's website, app or texts.
